Sarah Gonsalves, Head of Policy, Milton Keynes Council

Milton Keynes has become a test bed for Internet of Things deployments in towns and cities. Gonsalves says that it has been important to take a strategic approach to the multiple deployments of sensors across Milton Keynes that gather and re-use data to improve local services. As the MK Smart programme – funded by private sector companies, InnovateUK and Open University – continues to develop use cases, she hopes that colleagues across the country can make use of the lessons learned. One major lesson is to first be really clear on the challenges that are unique to each place, in Milton Keynes’ case, the domestic energy structure for new homes and traffic management to support the growing population.
