Stephen Baker says local government needs to find new methods of service delivery in which digital will be a key feature
Challenges are mounting up for local government and it will need inspiring leadership to overcome them, the chair of the Local Government Delivery Council told the recent Local Digital Futures conference.
Stephen Baker said it is not just about meeting ever more stringent targets for savings, but dealing with the structural challenges of devolution, responding to the cultural tensions in developing a more commercial outlook, convincing elected members to become more open to risk, and conveying to staff and the public why radical changes is in the pipeline.
“There’s a need to help establish new methods of service delivery, which means going beyond channel shift,” he said.
